Online memorial website questions

Straight answers about creating, paying for, sharing and managing a Held in Memory memorial.

Soft question and feature cards for online memorial FAQs

Creating a memorial

You can start with basic details such as a name, dates and portrait, save a draft, then return later to add the story, timeline and gallery. Each memorial is managed from the account that created it.

Adults can also prepare their own future memorial. That version stays private during their lifetime and lets them choose their own words, photographs and a separate verified Legacy Contact.

Privacy and sharing

Public memorials can be viewed by anyone and may appear in search results. Link-only memorials are marked noindex, but anyone who receives the address can open and reshare it. An ordinary private memorial is visible only to its signed-in account holder. After an approved future handover, a private self-prepared memorial can also be accessed by its accepted Legacy Contact within the creator’s recorded permissions, but never by ordinary visitors.

Ownership and moderation

The account holder keeps ownership of stories, photographs and other content they add. Premium visitor tributes are held for approval before publication, and the account holder can approve, hide or remove them.

Pricing and continuity

Free requires no payment and includes up to five photographs. Premium is one $49 AUD payment per memorial with no recurring subscription charge. One-time describes billing, not a guarantee of perpetual uninterrupted hosting, so families should keep their original photographs and story text too.

Common questions

Can I make a memorial private?

Yes. Choose public, link-only or private visibility and update it later. An ordinary private page is visible only to its signed-in account holder. A private self-prepared memorial can also be accessed by its accepted Legacy Contact only after a verified future handover and only within the creator’s recorded permissions.

Can family and friends add memories?

Premium memorials can accept visitor tributes. The account holder approves each tribute before it appears.

Can I edit the memorial after publishing?

Yes. You can return to update the life story, photos, timeline, settings and tributes.

Can I prepare my own memorial?

Yes, if you are 18 or older. Choose “Me (I’m planning ahead)” when you create it. Your memorial remains private while you prepare it. You can invite a separate verified Legacy Contact and choose limited memorial permissions for a future release. Inactivity never publishes or releases it, and a reported death still requires verification and a safety hold. Held in Memory does not replace a will or an executor, administer an estate, carry out any executor duty, or provide a place for legal, financial, medical or funeral instructions.

What is the QR code for?

The QR code links directly to the memorial so it can be used on service sheets, cards, keepsakes or plaques.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. Premium is one $49 AUD payment for one memorial, not a monthly or annual subscription.

What does the Free plan include?

Free includes a life story, dates, timeline, up to 5 photographs and public, link-only or private visibility. You can upgrade the same memorial later.

Who owns the content I add?

You keep ownership of the stories, photographs and other content you add. You give Held in Memory the limited permission needed to store, resize and display it as part of the service.

Can a link-only memorial be reshared?

Yes. Link-only keeps the page out of normal search indexing, but it is not password protection. Anyone with the address can open and reshare it.

Can I delete a memorial?

Yes. A deletion request hides the memorial immediately, and you can cancel the request from your account. Permanent deletion is currently paused while recoverable storage is being verified, so the memorial, photographs and tributes remain available for restoration.

What information does the writing assistant use?

When you choose Draft with assistant, the memorial details and notes shown in the writing tool are sent to OpenAI to generate a suggested draft. You decide whether to use it and should review it carefully.

Is Evelyn’s example memorial a real family?

No. Evelyn and her family are an illustrative, AI-generated example created to show how a finished memorial can look.

Does one-time payment mean guaranteed forever?

No. One-time describes billing and means there is no recurring Premium charge. Like any website, uninterrupted operation forever cannot be guaranteed. Keep your original photographs and text as well.

What happens if the service ever has to close?

Held in Memory would make reasonable efforts to notify account holders and allow time to save their content.

How do I get help?

Email support@heldinmemory.com.au for account, memorial, payment, privacy or ownership questions. Never email card details or your password.
